Faugères is on the south side of the first hills inland from the Mediterranean coast its 2,000-year history includes an important role in France's 14th and 15th century religious wars. Growing wine in this region dates back to the Roman era and was later maintained (or in some cases, revived) by the religious orders of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The buildings are thus spectacular with very narrow streets. Faugères celebrates the "Fête du Grand St Jean" (a wine festival, Festival of John the Baptist in English) on the second Sunday of July each year.
